As I work in all of those frameworks, I am thankful beyond words to be working and creating in the venues I love best.

In 2020, I maintained my arts enrichment classroom programs in the public schools in person until February, and then shut down. For my Arts Summer Camps, we did art boxes with looseleaf notebooks created by me of all original arts/art history/creative writing experiences and all of the materials to create over 7 pieces of art and writing, incuding writing journals. Most of these went out to families via scholarships, provided free of charge by grants. SHARING THE ARTS IS A MISSION.

I had a personal show scheduled for August which of course was cancelled. Hopefully back on track for August of 2021, at the Gilchrist Gallery in Cumberland, MD.

I also accept mural commissions for commercial or personal spaces... both small and large... NO job is too small.

Meanwhile, here is a new selection of various pieces. In truth, though, winter is a good time for creativity, as it makes me look more deeply within, with heightened mental clarity running high. Fighting ice just to get to the car is no fun, but indulging the hibernating urge in order to create is wonderful. While the outer skies might be grey,
the inner fires are blazing!
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I often have the question : "Can you teach me to paint?" To which I honestly reply no, and in a sense, yes. I can give you skills as a student of painting. I can give you encouragement. I can show you the ropes of composition, color theory, brushwork, how to stretch your own canvas. We can explore light and contrast, and the long road toward "style". We can discuss aesthetics. And more. But... once you have absorbed some of the history, the chemistry, the technical elements... only you can teach yourself how to employ the tools in your bag. It begins with lust for paint. And imagery or its abstraction. And brushes. and powerful urges to externalize the internal, however that is for you. It begins with a willingness to get out of your own way, to put aside pre-existing anxieties, bench the inner critic and be willing to experiment and just paint. Don't need fancy stuff... the toys will not make you an artist. Study, observe, observe more, draw every day, make paint sketches, make some more. Don't throw any away. Date them, file them. One day you will be glad you archived them. Now let's go paint...

Oil on linen. 30x40, hangs horizontally. The technique of sanding between glaze layers creates a unique and interesting surface. Colors show depth through soft blending. The crescent moon emerges as sharp focus against the night sky, with a subtle "red sky at night" giving hope to the oyster-men, crabbers and shrimpers who will launch before dawn!
I have completed murals in the following offices so far... Annapolis, Greenbelt, Owings Mills, Bel Air, Hunt Valley and Columbia, all in Maryland. The project is very engaging. Several patients and staff/doctors have willingly added their own leaves as I am painting, which they are happy to sign or initial! While there is some consistency in design and color schemes are congruent with the TMS green and brown corporate marketing materials, other accent colors are varying. Bel Air has some purples, while Owings Mills has lime green, and Columbia has some brighter blues, all in support of their decor/furniture. Touches of gold bring areas to life!

Only the first few were lightly sketched on walls prior to painting. I am now free handing every layout, beginning with trunk and branch systems before adding colors and details from dark to light. Please see earlier post. Office lighting is usually bright /varied and photographing
Lots is new in my art world. I am currently working on a corporate commission, installing very large paintings in mental health treatment offices for Greenbrook TMS NeuroHealth. The pieces represent Trees of Hope, their corporate image. I am so enjoying matching each painting to each office's color scheme, while including some subtle branding components. I have incorporated my own symbolism in the composition of the paintings, to represent the patient as they may come in to treatment through their success. I am very excited about the use of color and space to bring the patients into the visual. Many have spontaneously agreed to paint with me, adding their own leaves on the trees. This makes me very happy, as patients say they feel so included!

So far, I have installed murals in the following locations: Annapolis, MD., Greenbelt, MD, Columbia, MD., Hunt Valley, MD., and Bel Air, MD., and Owings Mills, MD. In the next weeks I will be working in Wilmington, DE and Easton, MD, as well as Glen Burnie, MD. Newark NJ is upcoming.

Photos will be uploaded soon.

I was in residence at Owl Lodge for a week in October, and it was glorious. Time to paint and write. Great friends. Terrific food. Truly an amazing opportunity to be immersed in art.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">It was inspired by the time of day that shrimpers must get out on the water, regardless for the most part, of weather conditions. To scrutinize the sky the evening before every launch has become a sort of semisuperstitious ritual, in spite of excellent weather forecasting. And so from the old rhyme...
and how a red sky at night would indicate fair weather on the following
day. In England the words refer to a shepherd who would say that a red
sky in the morning was suggesting inclement weather to follow. In
America the words relate to a sailor. It should be remembered that there
were no weather forecasts, as such, in days gone by and one had to make
one's own weather predictions. Those with the most knowledge and

- He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will
be fair weather: for the sky is red. 3 - And in the morning, It will be

ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of
the times?

I was recently named the director of this new program at Evergreen. Since September 2012, I have conducted four workshops in oils at Evergreen, and have 3 more planned for August, Sept. and October 2013. We will be reaching out to area schools in the fall of 2013 and into 2014, and I will be conducting some teacher in-service activities as well. I will be offering future workshops combining creative writing and journaling about nature and the environment for children and adults. Scroll back to earlier posts to see other information! Life in Good Luck Lodge at the very peak of the park at Green Meadow was great! The cabin was simple but well equipped for a comfortable 2 week residency. The weather was awesome...fall in the mountains...what is better? Showers of gold and russet, morning mists and bright days...the very best scenario to foster creativity!

As part of the residency agreement, I was able to provide a 4 hour meet and greet the public, working on a new piece and speaking with park visitors. I also did a lengthy presentation at Thumont High School's Art Department, concerning how to work from photographs when using natural themes in painting.

The Evergreen Heritage Center (EHC), a scenic historical
property in Allegany County, offers learning opportunities for both children
and adults. Last fall, the EHC
Foundation successfully conducted a pilot of its new Environmental Arts program
which offered participants the opportunity to attend a workshop conducted by
local artist Maggie Pratt in which they learned about sunflowers, and created
oil paintings of these beautiful plants. Several participants requested that we
continue this program and offer a series of workshops in which both budding and
experienced artists could learn more about our environment and capture their
experiences on canvas, in sketchbooks, and/or in journals. As a result, in 2013, the EHC Foundation is
offering a series of Evergreen Artist Workshops. The first of three spring workshops is The
Trees of Evergreen (April 21). This
workshop will explore the heritage evergreens planted at the EHC over 100 years
ago. Participants will receive
instruction on basic sketching, oil techniques, composition, etc. and then
engage in a brief “walk and talk” during which they will learn the history and
characteristics of these majestic trees and draw sketches that will augment
photos provided by the instructor.
Participants will then have the opportunity to create oil paintings of
their chosen subject(s). The second
spring workshop is Macro Nature (May 19).
This workshop will teach participants how to use small discoveries to
make create larger abstract paintings.
Attending artists will have the opportunity to collect blossoms, leaves,
stones, pinecones, and other nature treasures; to develop drawings of these
elements; and then to create a painting expressing their discoveries. The third spring workshop is The Evergreen
Landscape (June 16). This workshop will
explore landscape painting, including its role in historical preservation, and
the Hudson River School painters and their use of color. Attending artists may then create a painting
from a variety of photos of the Evergreen Heritage Center landscape. All workshops will be conducted by artist
Maggie Pratt.
I lived in this house at one time, and have many stories about that experience. I made this painting mostly for the sake of the beaver nest, which the State of Maryland said had to go...it was posing a threat to a nearby culvert under Old Route 40. But it was not. They took it away, and in 2 weeks, the beavers had reclaimed their home. The State came in and drained the whole pond, regardless of protestations from the property owner at the time, a fiend of mine for many years. After I did the painting, I sent him a copy in a Christmas card, several years ago, thinking he might enjoy the piece. He in turn passed it on to the new owner of the house, whose brother made a great effort to find me and purchase the piece as a gift for his brother. The painting now hangs in the very house of its content. I will add a photo of it in its new home soon. There is also a great deal of local history associated with the house and the area, know as the Shades of Death. I will also condense and post some of it, keeping history and folk legends alive.
